ENTREVISTA REALIZADA EN ARTE AL DIA CON MOTIVO DE LA FERIA DE ARTE AMERICAS MIAMI 2005
PEOPLE IN ART Nicolás Acquavella
The growth and development of the art of Latin America depends on a coinjunction of factors -museums, collectors, public and private institutions, specialized art critics, university teachers, specialized journalists, gallery owners and art dealers, and public and private policies- that may contribute to the achievement of this end.
It is a question of attitude and aptitude. The contribution of critics and the academic community makes it possible to establish a value system, divulge guidelines to render these values evident, take historical processes and universalist links into account. Art is universal, but at the same time, it draws on the particularities of each peoples or region. Latin American art has finally left behind the time when it was considered only on account of its strangeness or particularity. Today, it partakes of international styles and joins in the wider processes of the art world, without however forsaking its original aspects, which are the ones that distinguish it.
Gallery owners and art dealers who bet on its validity as a plastic language to which vaster audiences may have access carry out a very important task in terms of diffusion and persuasion. They bet on the future, since the growth of the art market will allow a more sustained development of Latin American art, re-kindling artists' creativity. For this reason, we have requested her opinion.
Has art become globalized?
Do you believe in the globalization of art?
I would say that, in a certain way, it is in the process of becoming part of that complex equation, but it has not categorically achieved this. A more active participation of all artists in every country, without distinctions in terms of priority, is essential. To avoid divisions into sectors and to render more flexible the rigid structure of diffusion at the global level that still prevails would be the path to follow.
Do you consider that painting continues to be a valid and powerful medium?
Such a transcendent medium of visual expression cannot possibly disappear. On the contrary, a strong tendency to prefer painting and drawing to sculpture prevails worldwide. Painting will always be the most important catalyst for an artist's creative capacity, taking drawing as support and point of departure.
What is the current position of Latin American art in terms of international recognition? Latin American art is gradually occupying increasingly solid positions in the strata of international art. However, it has not attained the level of definitive globalization. It does not yet occupy the most preeminent place, but it is highly respected and many countries have demonstrated the leading role it plays in the context of contemporary art at the international level. |
